A discussion by the fire in the late evening…

"Well, mother, let me start by telling beginning when it was sunset. Uncle Roland wanted to head back, because we still hadn't caught anything (I couldn't quite bring myself to see a deer die today, so I wasn't exactly helping), and he likes the moonlight less than I do. So we turned around - Uncle was glad; I was a little sad to have to leave the forest. But then I saw the tracks of a deer in the dirt, and the deer had a smaller stride than normal, so I thought maybe he was hurt, maybe he would be an easy mark. Anyway, Uncle grudgingly agreed, and we followed it. But then I heard something… I asked Lagim [[Ed. note - La-heem]] and he looked and saw a bear heading towards us. Bears in these woods don't normally take an interest in me, he must have been angry, something was wrong with him, I don't know, I just don't know what it was…

"Anyway, the bear charged towards Uncle, and I was scared and Uncle was scared, and I told Lagim to attack, and I made a wolf come because sometimes wolves can scare bears even though they're smaller, and the wolf attacked but the bear didn't run away, and I threw my spear and pulled out my dagger and Uncle was fighting the bear and then suddenly Uncle dropped to the ground and the bear came toward me and I pulled out the dagger my sister gave me when I asked for it and slashed at the bear and the bear finally fell…

"I heal animals I find in the forest that are hurt a lot, so I did the same thing to Uncle, and he woke up and was well enough, and I made light to help him see… and we didn't want to take the bear meat because we didn't know what happened to the bear and maybe its meat was cursed, and so we burned it there, and then I made sure the fire was safe and then we headed back here and I'm sorry I'm home so late, but that's what happened and I'm ok and Uncle's ok."
